Carnegie Leisure Centre
02/12/2011
Another eagerly awaited facility has now opened, the refurbished Carnegie Leisure Centre. I enjoyed a sneak preview prior to the doors opening last Saturday. The facility is like a Tardis, seemingly larger on the inside. It boasts state-of-the-art equipment, but I am pleased to say it preserves the original Edwardian features of 1905, when Andrew Carnegie, our great local philanthropist, presented it to the community.
The new Leisure Centre is truly impressive and includes, among other things, an 85-station gym, swimming pool with moveable floor and a health suite with Turkish baths. It will be great to have these facilities fully up and running for the community. I am sure our renewed Leisure Centre will be the envy of the surrounding areas and will attract many fitness fans and leisure-seekers to Dunfermline.
The project has come in for some criticism for exceeding timescales and budget but this has been due to structural defects that could not have been identified until work began. However, the result is a Leisure Centre equipped for its next hundred years of service to our community. I think Andrew Carnegie would have been proud. And, since it has something for everyone, young and old alike, I look forward to becoming a member!
