£5 Million Broadband Initiative

Dunfermline MSP Bill Walker has welcomed a £5 million national fund to help rural communities gain access to high-speed broadband.

Rural groups can apply to Community Broadband Scotland (CBS) for funding, as well as receive practical support and advice via a telephone helpline and website launching in October. A specialist team will also provide hands on assistance to those in need.

Mr Walker said: “I very much welcome this initiative, which will see £5 million targeted over the next three years. Communities in Fife can apply for funding and access a wealth of information, so they can be part of the broadband revolution.

“High-speed internet access is vital in this day and age. It enhances lives and is vital for the local economy. As someone who currently doesn’t have broadband at home, I understand only too well the difficulties many of my constituents face. Everyone should have access to a fast internet connection, wherever they live.

“I would encourage community groups to find out if they are eligible for funding and to look out for the launch of the website and phone line.”
